GRiSO 1100 rolling noise Empty
PostSubject: GRiSO 1100 rolling noise   GRiSO 1100 rolling noise Icon_minitime1Fri Aug 20, 2021 11:47 am

Hi,

I would like to share this with you to know if someone has experienced the same.
I cannot really say when it started... Suddenly I started paying attention to it and it became a bit anoying....It's hard to say if this rolling noise has been gradualy increasing or not, but it seems so....
The noise is not related with engine parts (if I grab the clutch al let the revs go down the noise pitch remains the same).
It's also independent of what gear is engaged (one possibility would be gears with pitting...)
It seems it is only related with the rolling speed...I start hearing it around 40 km/h and it seems to fade away after 70 km/h.
It could be coming from the drive shaft (I heard about bad bearings, destroying the seals and causing oil leaks, but I don't have none of that...No play on the bearing too...)
Gearbox and drive shaft oil levels are OK. I changed both recently and found no metallic particles on them....
Could it be the secondary shaft on the Gearbox?.....Front wheel bearing (I could be wrong, but it seems the noise is coming from the front)?

Anyone felt the same anytime?

Thanks a lot,
Luis

I think you've hit the nail on the head with the front wheel bearing.

They're cheap to replace, but a bit of a pain to remove.  I use a expanding split collar found in this set I purchased.

Really Dave?... Can it be the damned front wheel bearings?
Do you think I could feel somethig if I would Taíse the wheel from the floor and Turn it free?

If you have the tools to raise each of the wheels that is the best way to rule out wheel bearings

Hi,
Yes, I think this is what I will do...
I will have to improvise a little bit because I don't have the right stands

I think I know what it is........

Have noticed the same thing on my 2014 GRiSO for ages. Seems to come from the front wheel area. Bugged me to the point where I had my mechanic check the front wheel bearings. They were pristine apparently. Scratch that theory. Did the whole clutch in and/or select neutral so that I could listen with less engine noise and without load on the drivetrain. Same as your experience.

With my bike, it's most noticeable when in the normal riding posture. If I lean left or right far enough to see the front wheel contacting the road, the noise disappears completely. Sit back straight, and the noise is there again.

OK, so I went out one day and tried to really take notice of what's going on. As luck would have it, I was keenly observing this frustrating anomaly when I drove onto a newly resurfaced piece of road. BINGO! Noise all but disappeared. Pulled in the clutch and released the throttle. Much quieter. Back onto regular tarmac again, and the noise instantly returned.

So, that's my longwinded way of saying its the tyres. In my case, the Pirelli GT Angels are almost worse in this regard than the old Metzelers. This rolling/rumble sound that seems to reflect straight up to the rider. The fact that it markedly changed when the road surface did pretty much assured me that it wasn't anything mechanical as such, as the noise of bearings etc would be constant, and not related to the road surface.

Just my experience.

Brent.

Hi Brent,

Thanks for sharing.
I raised the front wheel from the ground and could find any signs of problems with those bearings...no play, no strange vibrations while turning...
I will pay attention to noise levels in different pavements in the future...
I have currently the Bridgestone Battlax BT023 with almost 8.000 km on them. I cannot tell if this noise is there since I have installed them.

Luis

I really doubt it's a wheel bearing but having said that I'd not want to hazard a guess.

Hi all,

I just want to do an update on the subject.
The pavement type definitely has an influence on that noise.
I still could not understand if it has to do with rolling of the tyre over the different pavements or the way the different pavements reflect the noise back to you....

Luis

We'll change tyres and see what happens. Better yet, and cheaper, wear good ear plugs!

I periodically ride my GRiSO without earplugs and am convinced it's about to explode it's so noisy. Ear plugs in? Sanity restored! Very Happy

Mine makes a decent tyre noise, even with earplugs. It just is - at least you know your tyres are working...

Very Happy I feel you...

In fact the engine noises don't bother me if I know they are part of the package...
These old V-twins are air cooled (no water coat to absorb noise and vibrations, the cylinder fins vibrate and amplify noise, generous play/tolereances between parts to compensate the extended temperature ranges,...) and really sound like something mechanic, not like a vaccum cleaner.
It's part of their charm, and I like it.
But if something starts sounding like a bearing starting to degenerate, that calls my atention.

Hi Tony,

So you also detected rolling noise coming from the tyres?
My tires will still last a couple of thousand miles, but I will pay attention to that on the next swap...

Yes Luis, all tyres make noise as they roll over the pavement - some more than others. When your ear tunes out the engine clatter, it starts looking (listening) for other things.

If I am on the gas, I hear the exhaust, if I am cruising, I hear tyres. All these noises are normal but as someone else has pointed out "other", not normal noises are the ones to worry about.

As tyres wear, they may make more noise or less noise - really depends on the brand and inflation and road surface.

Go ride. Enjoy your ride.

Check the front bush (mounted to frame, accessible behind right side plate) on the carc torque arm, you'd be amazed at how f*cked O-rings and rubbing metal can make all sorts of weird sounds come from anywhere on your bike.

Hi Buellbloke.

Sorry, I just saw your post now.
What bearing are you talking about? Can you point it in these pictures?

Thanks,

Also, make sure it's not a stupid connector rattling in the headlight housing. Unlikely by your description but ils easy to check and rule out.

Hi,
Thanks for the inputs. I'll take a look to all of that.
But it's a continuous rolling noise, independent from engine revs, gears, suspension work, street bumps, ....

Tyres contribute definetly. The noise changes with different tarmac types. The front wheel bearings are something I will take a close look with the next tyre swap. I checked them with the front wheel assembled and couldn't feel anything special...
I also get the impression that this front plastic fender turma into music any vibration coming from that front wheel...I have considered taking it off to check...

110 views and not a single comment, to say am suprised is an understatement.
The torque reaction arm frame mount is a service item, if its been changed to a silent bloc and worked itself loose then it will constantly rattle I imagine.
Maybe even the original bush will rattle, it only needs a thou of play that might not be visible with the naked eye.
Prob is you might not be able to feel it with your hands pulling on the arm.
Any play is made evident through torque reaction, primarily this is when its put under load.
The only way to be sure is to remove the frame side plate and investigate.
My bike has only done 13k miles it had the issue when I bought it so would say it might have been knackered from as early as 5- 10k miles.
That said beetle has the same torque arm and his doesnt rattle, I imagine he has done considerably more miles than mine has.
For people with the original torque arm upgrading to the silent bloc seems to be pretty much the norm.

Guzzisteve was the fianl answer that I was looking for.

Hi Folks,
Hope everyone's keeping well

Mathias,
I think you'll know if the front wheel bearings fail...when mine did I could hear a grinding noise (a bit like when brake pads wear down & the backing rubs against the disc (steel on steel!).

There was a fair amount of play & the grinding noise when I spun the wheel so it was very obvious.

Hope that helps.
if you need bearing & seal info I can dig it out for you when I get home.

Cheers.....
Rich
