OK, I'll try and keep it short. This was a comedy of errors that shouldn't of occured.
Bottom line is that Ralf's bike did its tappets a couple of months ago. A bit of argy-bargy and warranty was approved but there was going to be a delay getting the kit.
Good news was that I had bought a kit for my bike, a 'C' Kit which contains *Everything*. Since my bike runs like a champ I couldn't see any reason to swap it out immediately and Ralf's bike only needed the 'B' Kit which doesn't require the heads tà king off to shim the valve springs.
So I stick the relevant parts of *My* kit in Ralf's bike and all is good.
UNTIL he goes away for a trip down to Victoria. Here's where it gets interesting.
Long ago, in a galaxy far far away I sent off an ECU to be remapped by a Guru. Now the Guru did have a severe car accident but it took much longer for the ECU to come back with a 'Reflash' that was supposed to be quid-pro-quo for a host of shit than it took him to recover. No worries, but the ECU had a broken port. I was given some cock and bull story about it falling off a bench but I could see it wasn't actually the unit I'd sent over. If I had just been asked if I would accept a damaged but working unit I would of said 'Sure', in fact I did, before it came back and realised I'd been duped into accepting an unsaleable unit. But it worked.
Anyway, fast forward and when I had to remap Ralf's bike my other two 'Spare' ECU's were overseas. I knew the damaged one worked so I mapped it up and it went in Ralf's bike. I can't remember the exact reason ne needed another ECU? Perhaps it just seemed like a good idea at the time!
Anyway it got water in it and shat itself on the Victorian ride. Ralf's had to get an $800 tow home. This made neither of us happy.
No issue on my part. By now one of my *Spare* ECU's was back so I flashed it up and sent it to Ralf. He installed it and after warm-up it suddenly ran like crap. While immediate thought were electronic he lifted a rocker cover and found one of the 'Pads' that goin the rockers on roller bikes sitting in the top end.
My heart sank. The only way that they can fall out is if there is a huge increase in valve clearance. What could cause that? A collapsed roller tappet
OR a bent valve. Fuck, fuckity, fuck-fuck!
So he drags it up here and I tear the camboxes out again and Lo and behold, all the 'Pads' are in the rockers, nothing is amiss, the stack height of the valve springs is perfect! WTF is going on? It was a flat Tappet bike. When it was built the 'Pads' didn't exist??? How the fuck was there an extra one???
Then it slowly dawned on me.
When I'd been installing the kit I'd been a 'Pad' short. *My* kit was one of the early ones assembled by the importer and the shaved ape masquerading as a picker had opened the sealed boxes that contained the replacement camboxes, (why???) and not re-sealed them but while some of the other parts were bagged a fair few of them appeared to have been tossed in to the box like some sort of mechanical, Italian, 'Shake A Cake'.
My guess is that somehow one of the 'Pads' hid somewhere in the cambox and I just didn't see it. When the engine was running it eventually jumped out of wherever it was an lay in the head waiting to perplex Ralf when he pulled the rocker cover.
Anyway we reassembled the bike, sans *Extra Bit* and fired it up. It ran like a dog.
Connected Guzzidiag, TPS was way off, presumably because the new ECU hadn't had the TPS reading re-calibrated. Did that, re-set the self learners and balanced the TB's. Idle all over the place! Why? Because Ralf is a Noisy Moron and refuses to fit his dB killer. Eventually loaded the Mistral no dBk map and played with the CO trim and it now runs very well.
IT WOULD RUN BETTER WITH A FUCKING dB KILLER IN BUT HE WON'T LISTEN!At the end of the day though it was a tuning problem, the extra Pad was just there to fuck with my head
