Excessive oil consumption 1100

my 1100 GRiSO seems to be using a fair bit of oil
Approx 250ml on a recent 350km ride

Its not smoking, it performs really well and the airbox seems clean and dry

Any ideas, is this as I suspect excessive ?

The last couple of rides I have been “enjoying” the performance

Hi Mike, Same story for my 1200 8V....I bought it at 13k & have done 34K miles; always burned lots of oil despite running great, no smoke & just smells of almonds & burned oil/ester (especially if you smell exhaust during idle or just pulling up at lights) ....my airbox is always oily though.

I did compression test and it's fine....Feedback here was (also based on oily/black piston top photo) was rings never run-in properly and needs glaze bust & new ring set PLUS hard run-in.

I've bought the bits and will strip it down after North Wales run in June. In meantime I've just ordered compression leak down kit to check more carefully the compression at different piston positions - with valves shut just to see if there's anything wrong there. When I strip it down will also check valve guides although they seemed Ok when I rollerised (shimmed up inlet springs - so valves off then & new seals).

Not sure telling you my problems helps you, but can lend you the compression tester & leakdown stuff (plus air compressor) if you need ?

A friend of mine is a long term guzzi tinkerer (and fellow GRiSO owner)and has the compression testing kit, thanks for your kind offer

He said not to be too concerned, it only happens when I ride it hard (sticking with his 8v) I will keep a watching brief

Where are you running your oil level? If you insist on 'Topping it up' to the 'Full' mark it will keep using it. Just let it drop and as long as it doesn't go below the end of the stick you will probably find it will reach a point and then stop using it. Use that point as your 'Full' mark.

No I have followed all the advice and never fill above half usually have it a third up the stick

I think its because I have been giving it a bit of a ragging recently maybe its time to swap for an 8V

Maybe keep ragging it a bit and it'll settle down.

Love the 2V motor, I can't treat my 8V like any of my other guzzis.
