Subject: The comprehensive GRiSO exhaust thread.... Tue Feb 11, 2014 11:06 pm
Ok this is my thoughts, I have noticed that we really do not have a single go to thread for the exhaust/slipons for the GRiSO. So I was hoping to get one going with installed pictures sound clips etc what ever you have or can find. Just so we have a repository of whats out there in one spot. Hoping to get head pipes full systems blah blah blah.
so as a starter the EXAN CONICAL NX CAP stainless can:
available from: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] They also have other variants on the page

ARROW PRO-RACING custom run from the Arrow Special Parts shop. Available in Satin or Polished finish.

Made by Arrow Special Parts (and now listed on their website, so may now be available from Arrow dealers!) [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Here is a photo of the full system (titanium headers and mid-pipe) - headers are routed differently than the stock pretzel twist™. (I prefer the stock look...)

Stock was too big, heavy and quiet for me. I'd had a pair of Mistrals on my V7 Cafe and liked them, so I went with a Mistral carbon fiber reverse cone on the GRiSO. Bought cheap lightly used on eBay, but discovered that it had no db killer. Found one from another model and it fit with a minor mod. Looks and sounds right to me, and no fueling mods necessary. Price of a new one is about $700. I've got about a third of that in mine.

I'm loving the growl that accompanies my OEM Termi pipe...

In my experience most of the aftermarket offerings will work well enough but, within limits obviously, the closer the physical restriction of the pipe mimics the factory offering the more pleasant the bike is to ride.
This doesn't mean that it has to be whisper quiet, (Good lord! Its a GRiSO. If we're talking 8V it'll already be making a noise like a cement mixer full of bricks!) but I've experienced a lot of aftermarket pipes and all of the 'Free Flowing', (Read 'Loud!) ones without a dB killer are not only tiring on a long ride but destroy economy, upset performance and make the bike vibrate like a bastard.
Mark's experimentation with other mapping options for a 'Louder' pipe showed that to get the bike smooth again he had to remove so much spark advance and throw in so much fuel that the engine became soft and doughy and its performance vanished!
Yes, you probably could, with a LOT of work develop something that will give you a couple more HP right at the top end. But at the expense of rideability and overall enjoyment. Who wants that? Not me I'm afraid. The most unsuccessful experiment I tried was very early in the piece.
A work of art, it was beautifully made but the inlet pipe was too large and leaked playing havoc with the O2 sensor and it was hideously, painfully loud. I was supplied with a supposed dB killer eventually. It didn't fit either and was basically a tube with a cone on the end. It really upset the fueling, gave the bike a bomb-hole in the midrange torque and on the one longish trip I took with it on it left me with tinnitus for three days and Jude had to shout at me even louder than usual to get me to respond! It's a real pity. I loved the look of it. It just didn't fit or work.

You know Pete, I almost bought this set up back in 2010 when I got my 09... Fortunately for me, someone I know purchased it and told me that it was loud and the bike ran like shit with it, he was so pissed. Glad I didn't pull the trigger before I heard from this guy!!

Its a lovely pipe, it really is. The bloke who built them who unfortunately died recently was a wizard with a welder. If it had just retained another bend in its midsection and had an effective dB killer and a cat it would still be on my bike. I gave it to Greg Field to try on the GRiSO Pinko in Seattle but I dunno if he ever tried it.

Then there is the TERMIGNONI - The official aftermarket pipe available from your Moto Guzzi dealer.
You're going to pay a bit of a premium for this bit of kit, but it is a Termi and built purposefully to Moto Guzzi specs.
Though I'm not sure that it is available anywhere other than through official MG channels. Correct me if I am wrong there

Mistral Hi-Pipe. I had a Stainless version of this on Pinko. It worked really well even though it didn't have a dB killer. My guess is the extra bends helped. A right angle bend is equivalent to adding about a metre of length to the overal pipe in terms of physical resistance.

Oh yes. You can kiss goodbye to luggage!
Thing is when I tour nowadays on the GRiSO I'm always travelling light. The trip I did in 2010 on Pinko up the West Coast of the US with Chuck I carried everything I needed, plus Navigator and a laptop, in a tail bag and the 'Big' Guzzi tank bag.
If I want to carry more junk I take the Mana which has enough luggage space to carry bound volumes of every edition of Hansard since federation!

We don't need no stink in bags.
That's why they make back packs and tank bags.
Next you will want to put a sissy bar on it.
