Have you considered taking a road like 89 south along the western shoreline of Cayuga Lake to Ithaca and on to Whitney Point and back onto 81 when you pass thru upstate NY.? Speaking as someone who grew up in that area I can tell you that there is some very nice country to be ridden in the Finger Lakes region. You will no doubt be finding that throughout the trip though too.

Thanks for the encouragement we are planning 16 days to complete. The itinerary is deliberately fluid with only the capitals as fixed points, and of course the Guzzi rally in Lavigne on the 27th. Cayuga lake to Ithaca etc is beautiful, but we have already done 4 States 4 Capitals on our way to the MGNOC rally in June : NY, VT, NH, MA. Detroit could be the gateway to a possible future western states trip.
Next year we are planning Milan to Tallinn.

Correction : it ended up being 16 Capitals 16 States (not 15) culminating at the Ontario Guzzi Rally last weekend in Lavigne, Ontario. By the time I parked the bike at home in Toronto the Tenni beast clocked 7,702 kms (4783 mls) in 14 days. Both GRiSO performed admirably, no issues. Just filled up with gas and occasionally checked tire pressures and oil. (Actually one screw of the oil radiator cover managed to loosen itself and fucked-off somewhere).

Notable roads were the Natchez Trace (Jackson MS to Nashville TN) and the so called "triple nickel" (route 555) which we took on the way from Charleston WV to Columbus OH. The latter being a bit of brown underpants ride when done at speed.

Met wonderful and friendly people in the south, temperatures that went from 36 C in Baton Rouge to 14 C in Lansing MI. Saw only one MG a Daytona just outside Nashville. He was as surprised as I was when we shook hand in a side cafe.

That's a great little road! Just when you think Rt 50 is about to get boring (Rt 50 in West Virginia is tops, and they've just repaved some of the crazier turns) as you enter Ohio you take a right. A friend told me about it years ago and I was pleasantly surprised.

4800 miles - now that's a road trip! What's with the giant fire hydrant?
