So if I understand correctly, '15 and later use a longer filter which would fit on earlier years but would extend out below the oil pan on the earlier years?

Other way around. ‘15 onwards use a shorter filter. Both types of filer long + short have the same base plate.

Ok copy that. Thanks! So the 51348 is a bad idea for '15s and later because of the protrusion.

The Wix 51348 does NOT fit the 2017 8V 1200 GRiSO. It sticks out/down approx 1.5 cm's below the flush line of the oil pan. In contacting them, Wix does not recommend using this filter on this GRiSO, saying they do not make an OEM equivalent filter for the last production years of the engine. They're also shy about suggesting which of their filters is shorter by 1.5 cm.

This from Wix re; their 51438 and a replacement Wix for late model GRiSO;
"51348 is a 21 micron filter. 57035 is shorter at 32 micron , used on Briggs and Stratton engines and Kawasaki Small engines.
Just an FYI, you said you think you understand why I can’t recommend a replacement WIX filter. The truth is , because we don’t have anything that will meet their specifications and that is what you’re seeing now.
I would not recommend a WIX filter for this application because we do not offer a suitable replacement."

Sounds like later model GRiSO owners should stick with the UFI filter if there's no shorter equivalent of the 51348. Thanks for checking. It doesn't effect me with my 2011 and the 51348 works well. Edit: I see Pete mentioned several other filter options.

Bought a wix 51348 last year and when I installed it I had to stuff a paper towel around the outside of the filter to make a tight fit with the 14 point filter wrench. Thanks to someone here for that idea. So I just bought a new 51348 and the filter wrench fits perfectly. I kept the original box so I didn’t have to look up the number again, so at least the box said it was a 51348. Weird......

JohnA, FYI you can buy that same filter from NAPA Auto as #1348.
